It is with a heavy heart that we write this cancelation email since queer connection and community is so important during this time of uncertainty, isolation, fear, and rage.
We really wanted to make this gathering happen, but it’s clear at this point that it’s not. Not only is COVID-19 complicating all in-person gatherings, but Twin Oaks is also currently using the conference site as a quarantine space for returning ex-members and guests to return to the community. We thought about the option for virtual or long-distance options, but with our slow rural internet, that doesn’t really seem feasible.
Some good news
We did receive a $2500 grant from the Trans Justice Funding Project to be used for travel stipends to help POC and other under-represented low-income folks to attend next years’ gathering. We’ll hopefully roll out more details at the beginning of 2021 on how to apply.
What to do now?
If you have disposable income at this moment, please give it to POC-led organizations in your area, especially those combating police violence and funding bailouts. As we know, Stonewall was a riot and we owe our current Pride to the trans women of color who fought back against state-sanctioned discrimination and abuse.
If you need support, please reach out to each other via social media, national hotlines such as Trans Lifeline or The Trevor Project, or through local LGBTQ+ organizations.
We hope to see you all in 2021!
